The Second World War significantly transformed the societies of Central and Eastern Europe, where brutal occupation policies and extensive deportations shattered social bonds and structures. These changes had lasting effects on society as a whole and on individuals within their social contexts, particularly regarding gender roles and relations. The everyday and gender historical dimensions of the war in this region have often been overlooked in research, obscuring an integrated understanding of post-war impacts. This volume compiles contributions from various countries in a region marked by repeated conquests and harsh occupations by German and Soviet forces, alongside the resulting societal tensions and conflicts that emerged along ideological and ethnic lines. Key questions addressed include the ideological influences and everyday transformations of gender roles within occupation and defense armies and partisan groups; the impact of gendered interpretive models in official propaganda and the self-perceptions of both occupiers and the occupied; and the war's effects on the post-war period. Additionally, gender-specific bodily experiences are explored, highlighting their significance in understanding these historical transformations.
