Umbilical cord blood is taking center stage in a contested field between biomedical (non-)knowledge, cognitive uncertainty, different role ascriptions and perceived responsibilities for public stem cell donation or private family storage. With Germany and the United Kingdom as societies under research because of their contrasting differences in the individual perception and institutional construction of healthcare, this book reveals how cord blood, as a bio-technological „boundary object“, transgresses previously separate domains of society marking significant shifts in their mutual relations.
