Emil Holmer, born in 1975 in Karlstad, Sweden, has spent the last decade in Berlin's Neukölln district, where his abstract paintings reflect the urban landscape and its ongoing battle against gentrification. His works, often large-scale oil paintings, feature layered backgrounds that resemble chaotic façade painting, utilizing sprayed colors reminiscent of graffiti. Holmer employs bold black lines to define comic-like elements within these compositions. In an essay accompanying this publication, philosopher Marcus Steinweg explores the theme of painting transcending death, echoing Louise Bourgeois’ belief that "art is about life" alongside Jacques Lacan’s concept of absolute reality. Holmer's choice of large dimensions for his paintings not only mirrors his urban experiences but also invites viewers into an immersive space, enveloping them in his artistic reality. The landscape-format design of the book, selected by the artist, enhances this experiential quality, allowing for a deeper connection between the observer and Holmer’s vision.
