In 1975, the exhibition New Topographics – Photographs of a Man-altered Landscape at the George Eastman House marked a pivotal moment in contemporary photography. Curator William Jenkins highlighted the objective, detached style of selected photographers, who focused on the growing divide between “nature” and “culture” in American suburbs. Although environmental critique was not a central theme of the exhibition, the works resonated with the emerging environmental consciousness of the 1970s, influencing later projects like Lewis Baltz’s San Quentin Point and John Gossage’s The Pond. The New Topographics has since been recognized for its significant impact on international art photography, often regarded as a movement. This period also saw a surge in photographic representations of culture and landscape, closely aligned with the notion of “topographic” neutrality. The exhibition inspired initiatives like the Mission photographique de la DATAR in France, commissioning photographers to interpret rural transformations, and influenced Dutch landscape photography in the 1990s.
