Heinrich XXIV, Prince Reuss-Köstritz (1855-1910), from the younger line of the Thuringian princely house of Reuss, composed six symphonies, numerous songs, and various choral, piano, and chamber works. While he was appreciated during his lifetime by audiences, critics, and composer friends like Johannes Brahms, he is now considered a ‘minor master’ awaiting rediscovery. The Prince managed family estates in Bad Köstritz and Ernstbrunn, yet felt compelled to fulfill his musical talent, as encouraged by his composition teacher Herzogenberg. Engaging with the musical elite in Leipzig and Vienna, he produced original, high-quality works that are melodically rich and formally accomplished, reflecting late romanticism while retaining a distinctive voice. This book provides a complete overview of his compositions and includes the first publication of his letters to Richard Barth, Joseph Joachim, and Clara Schumann, along with affectionate memoirs from his daughters about their father’s impressive, yet complex personality. The sources collectively illustrate a composer navigating the responsibilities of his rank alongside his passion for music.
