Social decentering theory addresses the confusion surrounding the terms empathy and perspective-taking, which encompass a diverse range of human cognitive processes and behaviors. This innovative approach explores how individuals consider the thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and dispositions of others. The multidimensional theory and measure of social decentering serve as a unifying framework that incorporates essential elements found in other-oriented concepts. The initial chapters thoroughly present the theory and the development of a measure for social decentering, highlighting its crucial role in human communication. Subsequent chapters delve into the significance of social decentering, empathy, and perspective-taking in interpersonal relationships, including marital dynamics, team interactions, and workplace environments. The final chapter discusses the potential negative consequences of engaging in social decentering on individuals, decision-making, and relationships.
