Burushaski etymological dictionary of the inherited Indo-European lexicon

Viac o knihe

The Burushaski etymological dictionary offers a comprehensive analysis of over 500 etymological entries derived from Indo-European, excluding loanwords from Indo-Aryan, Old Indian, or Iranian sources. Approximately 200 of these etymologies are newly presented, while existing ones have been expanded and revised. The correspondences identified primarily relate to ancient and widespread Indo-European roots, particularly within the North-Western branch. The etymologies focus on core vocabulary, including terms for body parts, kinship, geography, shepherding, plants, and around 170 basic verbs and constructions. A dedicated section examines grammatical correlations between Burushaski and Indo-European, covering personal, demonstrative, and interrogative pronouns, as well as nominal, adjectival, and verbal morphology. The vocabulary also shows connections with both modern and ancient Balkan languages, with a special focus on lexical correspondences with Phrygian, which has roots in Ancient Balkan origins. This extensive lexical and grammatical evidence strongly supports the classification of Burushaski as an Indo-European language that has interacted with an agglutinative and ergative system during its development.
