The deterioration of global freshwater resources is a pressing issue, becoming a key focus in scientific and political discussions on environmental changes related to climate, land use, and biodiversity. Many regions, particularly in developing countries, face inadequate water availability in both quantity and quality. Water is vital for life, necessitating efforts from governments and other entities to secure access for society. Water security refers to the ability of a population to maintain sustainable access to sufficient, quality water for livelihoods, well-being, and socio-economic development. Addressing water security challenges requires collaboration among researchers, stakeholders, governments, NGOs, and communities. Discussions in expert workshops can facilitate exploration of these issues and the development of mitigation strategies. Such workshops foster a co-learning environment, promoting knowledge exchange from diverse global experiences. The recent workshop in Mekelle, Ethiopia, organized by the Sub-Saharan Regional Network of Exceed Swindon, adopted a multidisciplinary approach to tackle water security challenges. It emphasized the distribution and availability of freshwater, water scarcity, quality and pollution, governance, transboundary resource management, and related drivers such as land-use systems and climate conditions.
