Cyrill Lachauer (b. 1979) is an artist who merges anthropology and film with visual art, focusing on traces left in landscapes. His work stems from extensive travels through America's flyover country, as well as his roots in Upper Bavaria and Berlin. Lachauer investigates how tradition and heritage shape cultural imagination, using photographs, films, and writings to highlight overlooked details and signifiers as remnants of buried histories. The exhibition and accompanying book premiere a new cycle of his works created during two years of travel across the United States. Central to this collection is the film "Dodging Raindrops—A Separate Reality," which begins in Los Angeles and revisits the controversial ethnologist Carlos Castaneda's research expeditions, a key figure in the New Age movement. The narrative intertwines observations along the Mississippi with fictional elements and historical references, creating a rich, multifaceted experience of the landscapes explored. The project is enhanced by essays from Guido Faßbender, Alexander Knorr, Thomas Köhler, and Lachauer himself, providing deeper insights into the themes and contexts of his work.
