What is the state of philosophy today, and what might it be tomorrow? Michael Hampe explores these questions by examining the relationships among philosophy, education, science, and narrative, offering a Socratic critique of philosophical doctrines. Traditionally, philosophers create systematic theories to outline human experience and guide understanding of our place in the world. However, Hampe argues that this "scientific" approach is too narrow. In this essay, he seeks to rescue philosophy from its limited doctrinal claims, emphasizing its true purpose: to foster clearer thinking through productive disillusionment. Hampe traces twenty-five hundred years of intellectual history, beginning with Socrates, who did not establish strict doctrines but instead critiqued and refuted them. Through the Socratic method, he highlights the power of narration. Hampe posits that narrative and analytical disillusionment are the most valuable long-term pursuits of thought, deserving of preservation and development. This work serves as an introduction, critique, and call to action, illustrating how philosophy evolved to its current state and, importantly, how it could reclaim its role as a reflective space for examining the human condition, free from dogmatic pretensions.
