Drawing is akin to making an expressive gesture with permanence, as Matisse noted. As an expressionist painter, my practice focuses on the pursuit of the expressive mark, creating images from everyday life through gradual layering, patterns, and sometimes random mark-making to form a unified whole. This process requires a balance between intuition and the formal elements of composition, space, depth, and tone. My current drawings delve into the concept of place and the engagement with memories tied to these locations. The emphasis lies on the creative process and materiality in image-making, with the work evolving through subtle shifts in materials and varied mark-making techniques. I balance memory and imagination with photographic sources that trigger these ideas. Key themes include perspectives of inside looking out and outside looking in, as well as micro and macro views of place. My aim is to create dynamic works that resonate with viewers, reflecting the organic nature of art creation and personal connections to place. The viewer is invited to witness the evolution of a drawing, where mixed media combine to reveal layers within the work. The resulting images are engaging, dynamic, and bold while maintaining an ethereal, dream-like quality, evoking depth and stories within stories.
