Focusing on the experiences of teachers and young children in South African primary schools, this ethnography challenges traditional views of childhood innocence and agency. It explores how children actively engage with concepts of gender and sexuality through interactions in the classroom and playground, revealing the complexities of hegemonic masculinity and femininity. The study highlights the emergence of gender and sexual harassment among young children, emphasizing the influence of race, class, and structural inequalities. It advocates for gender reform strategies in early education as essential for addressing these issues.
