The thesis presents a groundbreaking investigation into low-oxidation-state group 14 complexes and their applications in catalysis, pushing the boundaries of inorganic and organometallic chemistry. It showcases the synthesis of significant compounds that challenge existing theories of metal-metal bonding and low-oxidation-state chemistry. A key achievement is the creation of the first well-defined low-oxidation-state main group hydride systems, which serve as highly efficient catalysts for hydroboration of carbonyl substrates, including carbon dioxide, rivaling traditional transition-metal catalysts and establishing a new subdiscipline.
