A drilling test rig for model milling was designed and optimized, leading to extensive tests with a model scale drilling rig. These tests demonstrated that conventional metal machining theories can effectively optimize the casing milling process in practice. Initial tests utilized conventional inserts, ensuring their geometry closely matched field-used tools. Additionally, inserts with modified rake angles and special tungsten carbide compositions were evaluated. High-speed cameras documented the cutting process and chip development in detail. Numerous casing milling tests were successfully conducted using both conventional and FHP inserts. Results indicated that longer chips were generated at high rotational speeds, while shorter chips were associated with lower speeds. Insert wear increased with higher forward velocities across all rotational speeds. Notably, the FHP insert, containing 10% cobalt, exhibited greater wear resistance compared to conventional inserts. The study also proposed innovative ideas for enhancing the milling process, and feasibility studies have been initiated to explore these advancements further.
