Through the Lens of Faith is Caryl Englander’s poignant visual archive of Holocaust witnesses, accompanied by discussions on their varied belief systems. The subjects, aged 80 to 102, were photographed during emotional interviews over three years, capturing the tension between an unmasterable past and the present. Writer Henri Lustiger Thaler, who has interviewed numerous Holocaust survivors, engaged Englander’s subjects in conversations about their experiences in Auschwitz, focusing on the expression of faith in a profoundly hostile environment. His thoughtful arrangement of their voices reveals complex spiritual responses and recounts the harsh realities of life in the concentration camp. Lustiger Thaler emphasizes that these narratives differ from grand tales of "spiritual resistance," instead highlighting everyday experiences where faith served as a human anchor and a source of identity and longing for freedom. The project will also be presented as an exhibition designed by renowned architect Daniel Libeskind, known for memorial spaces like Berlin’s Jewish Museum. Opening on July 1, 2019, at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum Memorial site, the exhibition will run throughout the 75th commemorative year of the camp's liberation, anticipated to attract around 4 million visitors. Libeskind’s design juxtaposes Englander’s photographs with the stark entry to Auschwitz, creating a powerful confrontation between symbols of imprisonmen
