In 1980, twenty-year-old Yan Pei-Ming visited Ornans, the birthplace of Gustave Courbet, a pivotal moment that shaped his artistic journey. Nearly four decades later, he commemorates Courbet’s 200th birthday by reinterpreting the iconic painting An Interment in Ornans (1849/50) at the Musée d’Orsay. Yan Pei-Ming translates this historical scene into a contemporary context with Interment in Shanghai, reflecting on his upbringing in the city where his mother is buried. The artist’s book captures this project in 290 fragments that, when assembled, recreate the original painting's dimensions—over six meters wide and three meters high. Born in Shanghai in 1960, Yan grew up during the Cultural Revolution and later pursued his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Dijon, France. His work has been showcased in solo exhibitions at prestigious venues such as the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing, the Musée du Louvre, and David Zwirner Gallery in New York. He has also participated in prominent Biennials in Venice, Seville, and Istanbul. The exhibition at the Musée d’Orsay runs from October 1, 2019, to January 19, 2020.
