In a world plagued by wars, hunger, inequality, and social injustice, wealthy societies like America, the European Union, Australia, and parts of Asia have erected immigration barriers to keep migrants and refugees from seeking better lives. Despite these obstacles, migrants persist in their attempts to cross borders, driven by hope. Germany has recently welcomed many fleeing violence, persecution, and poverty, yet this has sparked a rise in resentment, xenophobia, and racism, fueled in part by the divisive rhetoric of leaders like the U.S. demagogue Hurricane Donald Trump, who promotes hate and prejudice against those who differ from him. Many migrants endure harrowing journeys through the Sahara Desert, facing rape, exploitation, and forced labor, while others perish in the Mediterranean Sea aboard unseaworthy vessels. This raises pressing questions about the global crisis: What is the end game? Will nations collaborate to address these pressing issues and combat the forces perpetuating them? Should we still hold onto the hope symbolized by the Fall of the Berlin Wall, or have we entered an era where that hope has been replaced by division once again?
