Missing Member: Kyrgyzstan–A Country on the Move

Viac o knihe

Louise Amelie's documentary photo series artistically explores the global phenomenon of migration, highlighting aspects often overlooked in European migration politics. While migration is a fundamental part of human experience, public discourse frequently portrays it as an aberration, rarely questioning the existence of nation-state borders. Kyrgyzstan, nestled between Kazakhstan and China, features vast mountains and a capital, Bishkek, where prefabricated housing estates contrast with natural beauty. Despite the challenges of post-Soviet life, the young population here faces the world with confidence. Through a collection of texts and photographs that emphasize individual stories, the series expresses solidarity and empathy, illustrating that migration can represent both opportunity and the painful loss of loved ones. Louise Amelie, a Berlin-born director and photographer (*1991), specializes in documentary and street photography. Her works, created in the USA from 2016 to 2020, have received international recognition, including the German Photo Book Prize and the Belfast Photo Festival. Since 2021, she has focused on post-Soviet identity and migration in Central Asia, dedicating two and a half months to this project in Kyrgyzstan.
