The Taliban destroyed the monumental Buddha statues of Bamiyan, raising questions about why images provoke such intense passions and why generations of iconoclasts have been driven by hatred and fanaticism. On the other side of the prohibition of images lies the veneration of images, the fascination with them, and their mass proliferation, leading to a situation where images overwhelm one another in their abundance.
