Population growth and rising resource consumption present significant global challenges that must be addressed through sustainable development. Enhancing resource productivity via new circular economy concepts and innovative technologies is crucial to achieving this goal. In response, several research institutions at the Technical University Berlin established the Collaborative Research Center (Sfb) 281, focusing on disassembly factories for resource recovery in product and material cycles, funded by the German Research Foundation in 1995. After 12 years of research, numerous scientific results are discussed, covering management of industrial experience, educational aspects, and technology innovations for products and processes within a circular economy framework. The work examines ecological, economic, and socio-political criteria while considering human needs and limited natural resources. It highlights methods and tools for sustainable product development, planning for circular economies, product information systems, and innovative disassembly technologies. The book contributes to enhancing resource productivity, emphasizing that the challenges of sustainable manufacturing must be addressed globally rather than regionally. Long-lasting international collaborations have enriched the research, with contributions from TUB's international partners playing a vital role in the book's success.
