This book presents the proceedings of the 19th International Symposium on Acoustical Imaging, held at Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany, from April 3-5, 1991. Marking the first European symposium after significant political changes, the event saw a surge in participation due to newfound travel freedoms for individuals from Eastern European countries. Out of 239 submitted contributions from 29 nations, 193 were accepted for presentation, with notable representation from the USA (13%), Germany (28%), and several other countries. A total of 283 scientists attended, showcasing the interdisciplinary nature of acoustical imaging, which intersects mathematics, physics, engineering, and medicine. The proceedings include 151 papers covering various topics: Mathematics and Physics of Acoustical Imaging, Components and Systems, Applications in Medicine and Biology, Nondestructive Testing, Remote Sensing Applications, and Industrial Applications. The program featured a significant number of contributions on acoustical microscopy and explored "non-traditional" subjects like phonon imaging and atmospheric remote sensing, broadening the conference's scope. The success of the event and the quality of the papers presented are attributed to the dedicated authors and participants.
