The appropriate handling of blood components for hemotherapy represents a particular challenge for medical practice. The Cross-Sectional Guidelines released by the German Medical Association and its Standing Working Group 'Guidelines for Hemotherapy' reflect the current state of scientific knowledge on therapeutic blood product use, covering both the pharmaceutical preparation and the clinical application of cellular blood components and plasma derivatives. They comprise interdisciplinarily compiled and highly accepted recommendations that allow for support the decision-making of physicians in clinical hemotherapy.
