Dr. Richard Gordon's first job after qualifying takes him to St Swithan's, where he serves as Junior Casualty House Surgeon. However, a series of unfortunate incidents involving Mr. Justice Hopwood and a patient inexplicably coughing up nuts and bolts hinder his chances for promotion, which instead goes to his odious rival, Bingham. After enduring a string of disastrous interviews, Gordon decides to cut his losses and seeks help from a medical employment agency. To his disappointment, he discovers that all the best positions have already been filled, leaving him to consider a career in general practice.
