How did we come to be in this world? Is it possible to make a living solely by writing? How can one live meaningfully without betraying one's soul? These questions are posed by the protagonist of the titular story "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze," a young man resembling William Saroyan, who sets the tone for the entire collection: "I am a storyteller and I have only one story – that of man. I love life and I am humble before death. I am against mediocrity. If someone is an honest fool, I can love him; however, I cannot love a dishonest genius. While I live, I laugh at rules and mock traditions, styles, and mannerisms. How can one impose rules on such a magnificent invention as man?"
