Growing up in Kenya in the early twentieth century, brothers Matu and Muthegi are raised according to ancient customs of their Kikuyu heritage. However, their lives take a dramatic turn with the arrival of the 'red' strangers—sunburned Europeans intent on colonizing their homeland. As the brothers navigate the challenges posed by these newcomers, they confront the clash between tradition and the encroaching modern world, leading to profound changes in their identities and way of life.
