Applied Theatre: Ethics delves into the ethical dimensions of applied theatre practice and its implications for community engagement. It addresses the challenge practitioners face in balancing aesthetics with ethics, particularly when working with inexperienced or vulnerable groups who share and perform their stories. The text is divided into two sections, merging theoretical insights with practical guidance for theatre-makers to navigate ethical considerations in their projects. The first part provides an overview of critical discussions and the editors' personal reflections, introducing ethics in applied theatre through philosophical perspectives, scholarly literature, and Indigenous viewpoints. It offers practitioners recommendations for ethical community engagement, emphasizing voice, agency, care, collaboration, and reciprocity. The second part features diverse international case studies that illustrate how ethical theories are applied in various contexts, including projects in Greece, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, the US, the UK, the Philippines, and Canada. These case studies showcase a range of participants and highlight initiatives such as a professional dance theatre company aiding individuals in substance abuse recovery in the UK, interactive drama in Nigerian education, and the complexities of race in US applied theatre projects.
