The thesis presents an innovative lidar ceilometer designed to monitor cloud bases and boundary layer aerosols. Its unique divided-lens design effectively balances transmitter-receiver overlap and signal-to-noise ratio, addressing a longstanding challenge in lidar technology. The work includes a method for laboratory characterization of overlap and showcases enhanced sensitivity in the instrument's near-range. Detailed descriptions of the instrument's optical characterization and field performance are provided, highlighting its potential for commercial application in cloud and aerosol monitoring.
