The book explores the political landscape of Shia communities in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province from the 19th century to today, highlighting their struggles under a Wahhabi regime. It details their efforts to mobilize politically, including forming alliances with secular parties and Islamist movements. Following a 1993 amnesty, many activists integrated into civil society, but a resurgence of protests since 2011 has reignited challenges to the state. Drawing from rare Arabic sources and extensive fieldwork, it examines how state discrimination has shaped Shia identities and the region's geopolitical significance.
