Sir Oliver Tressilian is falsely accused of murdering Peter Godolphin, the brother of his fiancée Rosamund. The true murderer is his jealous half-brother, Lionel, who, too cowardly to face the consequences, has Sir Oliver sold into slavery on a Spanish galley. When the corsairs of Algiers attack the Spanish ship, Sir Oliver joins them, repulsed by the atrocities of European powers. He becomes the feared "Sea Hawk," the leader of Arab privateers in the Mediterranean. One day, Sir Oliver returns to the coast of Cornwall to seek revenge on his brother and win back Rosamund.
