Drawing on the lives of five renowned scientists, Mario Livio illustrates how even the greatest minds made significant mistakes, which were crucial to their scientific breakthroughs. Mistakes are a universal human experience, and these luminaries—Charles Darwin, William Thomson (Lord Kelvin), Linus Pauling, Fred Hoyle, and Albert Einstein—are no exception. Their errors contributed to the advancement of science, as erroneous ideas are often disproven, leading to progress. For instance, Einstein, while attempting to describe the universe's evolution based on General Relativity, fell prey to an incorrect notion of aesthetic simplicity. Fred Hoyle, a prominent astrophysicist, dismissed the emerging theory of the universe's origin, which he derisively termed “The Big Bang,” only to be proven wrong. Similarly, Darwin made a misstep in his theory of Natural Selection, Kelvin erred in calculating the Earth's age, and Pauling misjudged the DNA molecule's structure. Despite these blunders, these brilliant individuals were fascinating and their mistakes were integral to the scientific journey.
