The Great American Novel is a book which could only have been written by the humorist of Portnoy's Complaint, the satirist of Our Gang, and the fantasist of The Breast. It is a ruthlessly comic epic that's a cross between farce and folk-lore and which laughingly lays into the self-satisfied legends of manliness, brotherhood and community upon which generations of Americans have been raised. And, of course, it debunks–once and for all–the grandiose legend of the 'great American novel' itself.
