Paul Jerin is a gifted chess player. When he meets millionaire Matthew Blount, founder of an exclusive chess club, Blount arranges a tournament of twelve simultaneous games. This presents an irresistible challenge for Jerin, but it also proves deadly, as he is poisoned during the tournament. Private detective Nero Wolfe views the murder as a true gambit: a piece is deliberately sacrificed to gain a long-term advantage.
