The story follows the fate of fisherman Jacopo Frontoni, who must work as a Bravo to alleviate the plight of his father, imprisoned for alleged smuggling. Each time a body bearing signs of violence is recovered from the canals of Venice, it is attributed to Jacopo, who often stands like a statue in the bustling Piazza San Marco, waiting for a job. The people hardly dare to speak his name aloud. It is to this man that the Duke of St. Agata, Don Camillo Monforte, turns for assistance. The narrative explores themes of honor, desperation, and the struggle for redemption against the backdrop of Venice's dark underbelly, where reputation can be as deadly as the violence that lurks in the shadows. Jacopo's journey reflects the complexities of morality and the consequences of societal judgment in a city rife with intrigue and danger.
