Chlorinated phenols, particularly PCP, have been widely used as biocides since the early 1900s, especially in tanneries to protect raw hides from microbial deterioration. However, significant discharges of PCP into the environment lead to soil and sediment contamination due to its resistance to degradation and high toxicity, which poses serious health risks, including cancer and neurological disorders. With many countries banning PCP, the focus shifts to exploring indigenous bacterial strains for effective bioremediation of contaminated sites.
