Utilizing original historical sources, Salkeld analyzes the complex and often contradictory portrayals of courtesans in diverse texts, including the works of Shakespeare, Aretino, Nashe, Dekker, and Middleton. The exploration highlights how these representations reflect broader societal attitudes and tensions of the era.
