In Michael Watkins' view, we are fast becoming a tribe of separate selves. It was to discover the pockets of resistance to this that he undertook a journey through England, to talk to the people of the country, whose work is to be found outside factories and offices and who identify with, and have a fierce loyalty to, the land from which they come. Far from the motorways, tower blocks and take-aways, there still exists an older England, inhabited by people who identify with, and have a fierce loyalty to, the land and the community.
