Mast cells are ancient immune cells strategically located throughout the body, particularly near connective tissues and surfaces exposed to the environment. They initiate defensive responses against foreign invaders and are pivotal in type I hypersensitivity reactions. Beyond their role in allergic disorders, mast cells are essential for host defense against various pathogens and contribute to both acquired and innate immune responses. Additionally, they are involved in non-immunological functions such as maintaining tissue homeostasis, remodeling, fibrosis, and angiogenesis.
