Contemporary Iranian photographers utilize imagery from the nineteenth century to challenge official narratives and histories in post-Revolution Iran. Through their work, they reconstruct the past, integrating perspectives from marginalized groups. Key settings, such as the harem and photography studio, serve as important sites for deconstructing themes of nationhood, modernization, and gender. Scheiwiller's "Mirrors with Memories" explores how these artists' photographs act as a form of protest and remembrance, reshaping cultural identity in modern Iran.
