Through plays by Mary Powell Burrill, Angelina Weld Grimké, and Alice Dunbar Nelson, it explores their impact on Black audiences and the ways these pieces were disseminated through publications like "The Crisis" and "The Birth Control Review." The author seeks to establish a model for a contemporary queer Black feminist theater aesthetic based on these historical performances.
