Focusing on the journey of recovery for individuals with dual diagnoses of major mental illness and substance use disorder, this study highlights the transformative experiences of thirty participants, including consumers, staff, and families. Utilizing Glaser's grounded theory approach, the research contrasts the prevalent medical model with a more holistic understanding of identity, emphasizing that these individuals are not defined by their disorders. The core theme of "discovering a life" reveals the potential for rich, productive living beyond the challenges of coexisting conditions.
