Focusing on the intersection of race and art, the author explores how upper-middle-class black families shape their identities through the patronage of black visual art in New York and Atlanta. Utilizing over 100 interviews and observations, the work challenges stereotypes about elite cultural engagement and examines the role of race in the lives of successful black individuals. By documenting these dynamics, the author contributes to ongoing discussions about race and cultural participation within the art world.
