Focusing on the decentralization of the state, this collection of nine essays provides a comprehensive analysis of its impact on Latin America post-independence. The volume is structured into three parts: an overview, the political origins of decentralization, and its relationship with economic reforms. Case studies from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Venezuela, along with shorter analyses of Uruguay and Peru, reveal commonalities across different regimes and highlight the importance of historical and socioeconomic contexts. The essays suggest that neither democratization nor neoliberal reform alone can account for decentralization, advocating for a multifaceted research approach.
