The history of Amarillo reveals its dual founding, first established as Oneida in 1887 by J. T. Berry. Concerns about flooding led Henry B. Sanborn to acquire land for a new site, which became crucial when heavy rains in 1889 forced a relocation. This new Amarillo evolved into a major cattle shipping hub in the late 1890s, significantly boosting its population. Today, it stands as the largest city in the Texas Panhandle, with a diverse economy rooted in cattle, agriculture, oil, and natural gas.
