Understanding the influence of goal-structure on the disbandment of terrorist groups

The study investigates how the goal-structure of terrorist groups influences their disbandment, focusing on operative versus official goals and their geographical and effectiveness dimensions. It introduces a new framework for understanding these structures and employs a multinomial logistic regression model analyzing 155 groups. Findings reveal that strategic goal-structures correlate with higher chances of splintering and achieving victory, while abstract goal-structures are linked to defeat and a shift towards non-violent political participation.
