The book presents a philosophical critique of preferential treatment programs and reparations for slavery in the U.S. Stephen Kershnar argues that such initiatives are unjust for three main reasons: the state should allocate resources based on current abilities, past injustices do not justify claims for compensation since both victims and perpetrators are deceased, and the complexity of historical circumstances makes it difficult to determine appropriate compensation amounts.
