The narrative centers on Dieudonné Sabrina, a young black gardener accused of murdering his wealthy white employer and lover, Loraine. Set against the backdrop of social unrest in turn-of-the-twenty-first-century Guadeloupe, the story unfolds through multivoiced flashbacks during Dieudonné's frantic night following his acquittal. His only solace is a sailboat, La Belle Créole, symbolizing a bygone era. As the plot progresses, Dieudonné's fate becomes intertwined with the island's uncertain future, reflecting themes of identity, race, and societal turmoil.
