Cognitive task complexity significantly influences the written output of second-language learners, particularly affecting the production of dependent clauses and lexical items. The study examines the roles of pre-task planning and post-task editing, revealing that planning time enhances dependent clause production while reducing lexical complexity. It supports previous theories on lexical complexity in non-planning scenarios and highlights the challenges posed by negative task perceptions on attention maintenance during complex writing tasks.
