Set in 1959 East Germany, the story follows Ferdi and Helga Mann, whose tranquil life is disrupted when Ferdi loses his job as a police officer after a minor incident. As they face the oppressive reality of government surveillance, the couple's desire to escape intensifies, especially with Helga's upcoming trip to West Germany with their four children. Ferdi, determined to reunite with his family, embarks on a perilous journey to the West, unaware that the authorities are on his trail, leading to a tense race against time for freedom.
