The book explores social relationships in two contrasting neighborhoods of Newcastle upon Tyne, one affluent and the other economically deprived. Through five years of ethnographic fieldwork and innovative quantitative methods, it examines whether deprivation fosters or undermines social solidarity. Nettle analyzes the cultural, psychological, and economic impacts of poverty, addressing the ethical challenges of representing disadvantaged communities. This work contributes to understanding the complex interplay between culture and socioeconomic factors in shaping human behavior.
