Set against the backdrop of post-Civil War Texas, the story follows Rule Cordell, a skilled warrior armed with a Colt .44, who joins a band of guerrillas led by the charismatic yet unscrupulous Johnny Cat Carlson. Initially believing he is fighting for freedom, Rule quickly discovers that his companions are merely outlaws seeking personal gain. As he contemplates leaving the group, he faces difficult choices and dangerous challenges on his quest for true liberty.
